Total Skin Electron Irradiation (TSEI) is a well-established technique of irradiation used in patients
with extensive skin lesions suffering from mycosis fungoides (MF). The response rates are high,
however, the duration of the effect is limited.
There are various implementations of TSEI and probably the most common is called the Stanford
technique. The patient is irradiated from the extended SSD (source to surface distance) and rotated
in six poses to cover the whole skin with the prescribed dose. Due to the continuous demand for
local treatment in MF patients new methods of total skin irradiation emerge like sweeping technique
or irradiation with photons using rotational techniques.
The satisfactory effects of TSEI in patients with MF prompted attempts to use this technique in other
hematologic malignancies associated with extensive skin lesions like non-T-cell lymphomas or even
leukemias.
The summary of indications and outcomes in children and adults will be presented and the possibility
of use of TSEI in non-MF patients discussed.
