Farewell from Cyrus Chargari and Martin-Immanuel Bittner, who are coming to the end of their term with the yESTRO committee - PDF Version

We both joined the Young Committee of the European SocieTy for Radiotherapy and Oncology (yESTRO) in late 2017, and have served on the committee since then. These almost five years have been both very interesting and enjoyable.

We stepped onto the path towards the role when we participated in ESTRO’s Agora meeting in 2016. There, we interacted with both senior leaders and young members of the Society, and learned about yESTRO’s agenda, goals, and ambitions. Since then, we have embarked on a very exciting and varied journey.

One highlight was being members of the Scientific Programme Committee for the ESTRO 38 conference in 2019. As representatives of yESTRO, we contributed our ideas regarding the annual meeting’s agenda and priorities, discussed these with the other committee members, and co-developed the programme for the young track (an all-time conference favourite!) During our tenure, we experienced all the changes that came with COVID-19, the introduction of a new mentoring scheme and several research projects that were spearheaded by yESTRO (especially on questions of burnout). Overall, we enjoyed our representation of an immensely active, engaged, and forward-looking community of young professionals in radiation oncology across Europe. It is time for us to step down now, but we wish our successors all the best in what is a hugely rewarding role, shaping the future of radiation oncology in Europe.
