For several years, the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg (Germany) has offered successful courses in the field of particle therapy. The courses are organised under the auspices of the Heidelberg Institute of Radiation Oncology in close cooperation with the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Centre (HIT) at University Hospital Heidelberg.

The Hybrid Teaching Course Particle Therapy (course type 3) is aimed at national and international scientists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists and students or post-docs who would like to gain a deepened understanding of the physics of particle therapy and its clinical applications. FLASH radiotherapy with particles will also be introduced.
The course is divided into an online phase, which comprises six weeks of learning (from 14 October to 24 November) and two online sessions on Zoom on 25 and 26 November, and a hybrid attendance phase, which can be completed in person at the German Cancer Research Centre or on Zoom on 28 and 29 November. During the online phase, participants use the virtual learning platform Moodle, through which they can access various learning materials such as pre-recorded video lectures and PDF scripts, and they are allocated short tasks to work on in small groups. The online and hybrid attendance phases provide interactive sessions such as case-based scenarios and pro and contra discussions, as well as live lectures. The format enables exchange between our experts and participants to strengthen collaboration and the individual learning process.
HIT is one of the largest radiation therapy centres in Europe, and its isocentric gantry makes it unique. The ability to visit this site, plus the many years of experience held by the cancer centre staff in online-enhanced or hybrid teaching, mean that Heidelberg is an excellent place at which physicians, physicists and young scientists can gain further education.
