It is with sadness that we announce the passing away of Professor Sir Michael Peckham on 13th August 2021 at the age of 86.

As an oncologist he spent much of his working life at the Institute of Cancer Research/ Royal Marsden, becoming a Professor in 1973 and maintaining a prolific publication record throughout, particularly in the subspecialties of lymphoma and testicular cancer. A champion of multidisciplinary care, he also played a major role in shaping oncology training, research and service delivery.

Alongside his national roles, Professor Peckham always had an eye towards the bigger picture and co-founded a number of pan-European oncology associations bringing together multiple disciplines, of which the European Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (as it was originally known) was one. Later in his career he became the UK National Health Service’s first director of Research and Development. Professor Peckham was also a talented artist whose work was exhibited regularly in London and Edinburgh.

Professor Peckham is survived by his wife, Catherine, three sons and nine grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by the ESTRO community. His full obituary is available here >>>
