Falcon Workshop - Lung Cancer Re-Irradiation

This Falcon Workshop will explore the challenges and suggest areas of evidence based best practice in lung cancer re-irradiation. Participants will be asked to delineate a lung cancer recurrence case prior to week 1 which we will use as the basis of our discussions. The primary aim of the course will be to reduce clinical variability and inconsistency for this complex yet increasingly prevalent clinical scenario.

In week 1 a brief overview will be given on patient selection for lung re-irradiation. A radiologist will also give suggestions on how to differentiate radiotherapy related field changes from recurrent malignancy . We will explore target (GTVp, GTVn, ITV, PTV) and organ at risk contouring (proximal bronchial tree, heart, oesophagus, brachial plexus). The participants' delineations (both target and organs at risk) will be compared to the teachers’ delineations while discussing the differences. Participants will also be given a second opportunity to adjust their contours prior to the week 2 session.

In week 2  we will discuss evidence based cumulative dose constraint and the physicists team will address the challenges relating to summation of organ at risk doses across plans using simple and advanced methodology to ensure relevance to different practice settings. We will apply the discussed cumulate dose constraints to our case from week 1 and review participants contours and the subsequent cumulative dose plan.

This will be a multi-disciplinary workshop that will offer an opportunity to meet with radiation oncology, clinical physics and radiology colleagues interested in the field of lung cancer re-irradiation, and discuss the challenges and pitfalls to consider in everyday practice.

These online delineation workshops are aimed at junior clinical or radiation oncologists who want to improve their contouring skills or at more senior specialists who want to refresh and validate their knowledge and skills in this field.

  •  14 December 2021 - 18.00-20.00 CET

Before the workshop, pre-workshop homework will be sent out that needs to be completed before the workshop. This will be accompanied with prerecorded instructions how to use Falcon Educase and how to logon for the first session with WebEx. This will be sent one week before the first workshop lesson. On the first online lesson the faculty members will give a guideline presentation, and will review and comment your pre-workshop contours. Participants are requested to contour the case the second time based on the taught guidelines. On the second online lesson the faculty members will compare the first and the second submitted contours to the reference contours and generally comment on the delineations.

Accreditation

Application for CME recognition will be submitted to the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME), an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). EACCME credits are recognised by the American Medical Association towards the Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA). Information on the status of the applications can be obtained from the ESTRO office.
