Report on: Fifth Conference on small animal precision image-guided radiotherapy - PDF Version

The fifth conference on small animal precision image-guided radiotherapy took place in Munich, Germany, from 21-23 March 2022. Many of the Covid-19 rules were still in full swing and so the whole conference (except the dinner) was spent wearing FFP2 face masks. 114 radiation biologists, physicists and oncologists met in the beautiful setting of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich), many of them for their first conference ever. This meeting is normally held every two years but after several attempts to organise the meeting it was finally held in-person after a four-year break.

The conference brought together many people with an interest in precision irradiation studies for preclinical oncology. One benefit of having a gap of four years, was that much exciting new work was shown. Topics that were covered were tumour and normal tissue models for cancer, irradiation technology (including FLASH and ion beams), novel imaging methods, dosimetry, and much more. Also in this field of research, artificial intelligence was seen to make its first entry. In a special session dedicated to the vendors their latest equipment was presented.
